چکیده

Abstract The Cretaceous Cordilleran foreland basin strata exposed in the Book Cliffs of eastern Utah and western Colorado have motivated important concepts linking thrust belt deformation evolution largely on basis sequence stratigraphy, stratal architecture, sediment provenance evolution. However, these methods approaches generally cannot provide critical insights into temporal or causal linkages between architecture deformation. This is part due to discrepancies age resolution lack evidence with which directly couple supply basin-fill unroofing. Foreland basin stratigraphic control on thrust belt evolution

The link between orogenic activity and foreland basin stratigraphy is well established; however, potential controls by foreland basin stratigraphy on thrust belt architecture have not been fully evaluated. Mechanical properties of typical foreland basin stratigraphic successions influence the structural development of fold-thrust belts in predictable ways. Fundamental features of foreland basin...

Foreland basin systems

A foreland basin system is defined as: (a) an elongate region of potential sediment accommodation that forms on continental crust between a contractional orogenic belt and the adjacent craton, mainly in response to geodynamic processes related to subduction and the resulting peripheral or retroarc fold-thrust belt; (b) it consists of four discrete depozones, referred to as the wedge-top, forede...

Controls on erosion intensity in the Yangtze River basin tracked by U–Pb detrital zircon dating

a r t i c l e i n f o The Yangtze River dominates the drainage of eastern Asia, yet the processes that control erosion within the basin are obscure, making the interpretation of the detritus record difficult. In this study we used U–Pb dating of zircon grains from the modern main stream and major tributaries to identify the sources of sediment production, based on the diversity of zircon ages a...

Linking Taiwan’s subcritical Hsuehshan Range topography and foreland basin architecture

[1] The contemporary presence of the Puli Topographic Embayment within the Taiwanese thrust belt provides insight into processes that initiate and maintain a subcritical state in a thin‐skinned compressive wedge. Orogen‐scale analyses of Taiwan have succeeded in describing the processes and interactions that affect overall development of the thrust belt; however, relatively little is known abou...
